Hanan Ashrawi resigns from Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO): Reports

Hanan Ashrawi, a prominent member of the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO), has resigned, a PLO source told declared.

Hanan Ashrawi, a member of Executive Committee of Palestine Liberation Organization PLO, handed over her resignation to Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas, declared the source request to be anonymous.

Abbas is yet to accept or deny the resignation, the source continued, without revealing features on what prompted the move.

Hanan Ashrawi is a well-renowned name in the region, she is the Palestinian Authority’s highest-ranking female politician and has been a part of the PLO executive committee since 2009.

She worked as the spokeswoman of the Palestinian commission to the 1991 Madrid Conference and took participated in discussions with Israel.

Reports of her resignation first surfaced on The New Arab news website, which quoted sources telling her choice was in a demonstration against the PA’s declaration last month to resume coordination with Israel.

The sources reported the news outlet Ashrawi was “displeased with how the matter was managed”.

Last May, the PA severed all alliances and agreements with Israel after the latter’s plan to annex parts of the occupied West Bank.

However, it resumed coordination activities with Israel in November, after it said the United States had assured Israel would consider the current agreements with the Palestinians.

The sources also stated Ashrawi had demanded Abbas if she could leave her situation due to private reasons, after getting the coronavirus in October.
