Opinion: Silent majority has abandoned Le Pan and Macron

I went to the Salle du Peuple on Sunday to see how the vote in the departmental and regional elections was going. Although I am no longer a municipal councilor - à cause de Brexit - and no longer need to apply the ballot box, I thought I would take the temperature. Which was icy.

France: I went to the Salle du Peuple on Sunday to see how the vote in the departmental and regional elections was going. Although I am no longer a municipal councilor – à cause de Brexit – and no longer need to apply the ballot box, I thought I would take the temperature. Which was icy.

The French have the reputation of being strongly involved in the election, but not this time. By the time the votes were reached, the winner was clear. Abstinence has won on a large scale. Two-thirds of my congregation’s voters stayed at home, reflecting the national turnout. It was the lowest turnout in at least 25 years and a clear illustration of the rejection of voter confidence in every candidate and party.

Nationally, the results were a debacle for candidates who were in line with the unpopular president Emmanuel Macron, whose lists scraped barely 11 percent. Things were equally bad for the unfortunate right-wing Marine Le Pen, candidate of the Rassemblement National, the National Front, whose hopes of leading the vote in numerous regions came to naught. She took a lead in the first round only in Provence, and it was unimpressive.

Macron’s hubris led him to the possibility that he would not even make it to the second round of the presidential election
The traditional left, with 15 percent and center-right, with 28 percent, fared better, perhaps indicating that disillusioned voters are retreating to the traditional parties, albeit without enthusiasm. The extreme left has lost support everywhere.

It is difficult to say who is more humiliated. None of Macron’s ministers – four of whom were candidates in a system that allows politicians to run for office – got enough votes to advance to the second round.

It was a disaster for Le Pen, whose hopes of creating a starting point for next year’s presidential match have been dashed.

After a campaign in which her incoherence was palpable, nearly 75 percent of her traditional voters stayed at home. It was also a deeply impressive result for the greens, who apparently have insignificant support outside the big cities. And it was a reminder that French opinion polls tell us almost nothing useful. Only a few days ago, Politico Europe announced that Macron’s support was increasing, preferring to dismiss the dubious polls and avoid leaving their offices to speak to real voters.

The results suggest that politics in France is entropic Le Pen is completely hopeless. She is terrible on television, economically obscure and has a terrible staff. She did not utter a single memorable phrase during the campaign. Many of her on the flank of the political spectrum are ready to drop her before the presidential campaign, which she cannot win. Eric Zemmour, the sharp writer, columnist and star commentator on CNews, will increasingly oppose her in the presidential parties next year.

Macron’s hubris led him to the possibility that he would not even get to the second round of the presidential election in less than ten months. His obsessive Europeanist ideology and the clumsy management of Covid remind voters that his presidency has completely failed on every front. Its proposed economic reforms stalled. He did not succeed in overcoming the degenerate security situation in which the countries became essentially ungovernable. His narcissism roster. When he was slapped in the face by an angry voter a few days ago, many cheered. This round of voting was not so much a slap in the face as a right hook to the jaw. He united France against him.

Before the second round next week, it’s too early to be anything other than tentative – and the perverse electoral system could still produce surprises. But the silent voters represent an unequivocal rebuke to a French political class that fails and fails again.

It looks like the Frenchman Le Pen as well as the president have canceled.
