U.S. citizens already in the country aren’t being deported because of the Russian invasion of Ukraine, which has forced hundreds of thousands out of the country.

People in Ukraine will be able to stay in the United States for 18 months because of the “ongoing armed conflict and extraordinary and temporary conditions” in their country.

There were calls for President Joe Biden to protect Ukrainians who are in the US on a short-term basis, like students and tourists.

Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas said in a statement that Russia’s “premeditated and unprovoked attack on Ukraine has led to an ongoing war, senseless violence, and Ukrainians having to flee for their lives to other countries.”

“We will continue to help and protect Ukrainian nationals living in the United States in these very difficult times.”

The Senate Majority Leader, Chuck Schumer, said he had been pushing for the TPS designation for a long time. In a tweet, the senator said that the United States stands with the people of Ukraine.

It was also signed by about 40 people in the US House of Representatives earlier in the week. They were urging Vice President Biden to make Ukraine a TPS country.

Congressman Jamie Raskin, who is a Democrat, was one of the letter’s signatories and praised the TPS designation on Thursday. “It is a great honor to support Ukrainians here as they fight for democracy against fascist threats,” he tweeted.

“The largest conventional military action in Europe since World War II”: This is what DHS said on Thursday.

The department said that Ukrainians who have been in the United States since March 1 will be protected. Ukrainians can also apply for work permits because of the designation.

As the war entered its eighth day on Thursday, Russian forces took the southern port city of Kherson and surrounded the eastern city of Mariupol as they tried to take cities across the country, including the capital, Kyiv.
