An Israeli-American was killed by a gunshot in the West Bank. The man was killed when cars on a highway near the city of Jericho were attacked.

On Sunday night, Israeli settlers attacked Palestinian villages in the West Bank, setting fire to dozens of cars and houses. This is what led to the shooting.

On Sunday, a Palestinian killed two settlers from a nearby village by shooting them.

The Israeli-American man who was killed near Jericho was taken to a hospital in Jerusalem by paramedics, but he was later pronounced dead there.

Tweeted US Ambassador Tom Nides: “I’m sorry to say that one of the terror attacks in the West Bank tonight killed an American. I pray for his loved ones.”

The Israeli Defense Forces said that the attackers shot at Israeli vehicles three times and then set fire to their own cars.

The attackers fired at the police before running away, the IDF said in a tweet.

No Palestinian group immediately said that they were behind it.

Hamas, an Islamist group that runs the Gaza Strip but is less important in the West Bank, said the attack was a natural response to Israeli attacks.

A spokesman said in a statement, “The crimes committed by the occupation and the crowds of settlers will not be met with anything but stabbings, shootings, and car crashes.”

At a meeting in Jordan, Israeli and Palestinian leaders had promised to stop the fighting and calm things down.

Sunday, after the summit ended, videos posted online showed a large group of Israeli settlers going to the village of Hawara, about 4 miles (6 km) south of Nablus, where they lit fires and threw stones.

Sameh Aqtash, who was 37 years old, was shot in the stomach by settlers in Zaatara on Sunday night, according to the Palestinian health ministry.

This part of the West Bank is completely controlled by Israel, and Palestinians have criticised Israeli security forces for not keeping them safe.
