The Fallen Leaders: A Nation Mourns

Colonel Yitzhak Ben Basat, 44, the head of the Golani Brigade chief’s forward command team, was the highest-ranking officer to lose his life in the ground offensive against Hamas.

His widow, Hadar, struggled to articulate her grief, expressing, “All night I tried to write, I couldn’t get to it, and my heart is dying to say goodbye.”

Lt. Col. Tomer Grinberg, 35, commander of the Golani Brigade’s 13th Battalion, was remembered for his inspiring leadership.

His wife, Ashira, read a poignant letter she had written for his recent birthday during the eulogy, emphasizing his ability to “command others” and “elicit trust.”

Maj. Roei Meldasi, 23, a company commander in the 13th Battalion, was laid to rest in the military cemetery of Afula. His mother, Yosefa, tearfully described him as their “king” and spoke of the privilege of raising him.

Sgt. Eran Aloni, 19, one of the youngest casualties, was remembered by his father, Doron, as a “hero of the family” and a flower that had only just begun to bloom.

Cpt. Liel Hayo, Sgt. Achia Daskal, Maj. Ben Shelly, and Sgt. First Class Rom Hecht was also among the fallen soldiers, each leaving behind a void that resonated through the military community.

The Shejaiya Ambush: A Tragic Replay of History

The troops met their untimely end while conducting search operations in the heavily fortified Hamas stronghold of Shejaiya in northern Gaza.

The military believes that the command and control of Hamas’s Shejaiya battalion were significantly disrupted during the encounter, leading to a less organized operation with smaller squads.

The exact number of Hamas operatives killed in the battle remains undisclosed.

Shejaiya holds a bitter history for the Golani Brigade, as during the 2014 Gaza war, seven soldiers from the brigade lost their lives in the same neighbourhood.

The remains of Sgt. Oron Shaul, one of the seven, was captured by Hamas and remains in their possession.

A Nation in Grief: President Herzog’s Eulogy

President Isaac Herzog eulogized the fallen soldiers as the “best of the best, heroes among heroes,” emphasizing their sacrifice in defending their people and homeland.

He acknowledged the profound absence left by their deaths, stating, “…in all of our hearts.”

Golani Brigade’s Resilience Amidst Tragedy

The Golani Brigade, already scarred by the events of October 7, when 3,000 terrorists overran IDF bases and communities in southern Israel, killing over a thousand people, has once again faced the harsh reality of conflict.

The 13th Battalion, led by Lt. Col. Tomer Grinberg, was among the hardest-hit units during the previous onslaught, losing 41 soldiers.

Despite the heavy toll, the Golani Brigade remains at the forefront of the ground operation, aiming to free hostages and dismantle Hamas’s military force in the Strip.

A Nation United in Grief and Determination

As Israel grapples with the loss of nine of its finest, the nation stands united in grief and determination.

The funerals of these brave soldiers serve as a sombre reminder of the ongoing conflicts and the indomitable spirit of those who serve in defence of their homeland.

In their sacrifice, the fallen heroes of Shejaiya leave an enduring legacy that will forever be etched in the hearts of a nation that mourns their untimely departure.
