Israeli police foiled a planned attack on a synagogue in the Negev region last month, according to an official statement released on Wednesday.
The police arrested a 17-year-old illegal resident from Yatta, near Hebron, who was reportedly plotting the attack amid rising concerns over security in the area.
The incident unfolded when police received intelligence about the suspect’s intentions approximately a month ago. Acting swiftly, they initiated a search operation in the Kuseifa Bedouin diaspora, where the suspect was believed to be residing.
During the operation, police engaged in a foot chase, which concluded with officers firing warning shots into the air to apprehend the suspect. He was subsequently taken into custody and subjected to extensive questioning.
This arrest was part of Operation “Emergency Brake,” a newly launched initiative aimed at cracking down on illegal residents in Israel, particularly in light of the increasing number of terror attacks attributed to such individuals.
Since the operation’s inception in September, police have arrested 38 illegal residents and apprehended 11 Israeli employers, smugglers, and drivers in the Aror district alone.
As part of the ongoing crackdown, police Southern District commander Assistant Commissioner Amir Cohen ordered the closure of three businesses in the Negev for employing illegal residents.
These included a bakery, a grocery store, and a falafel restaurant, each facing a 30-day closure period. This move underscores the authorities’ commitment to curbing illegal employment, which is seen as a contributing factor to security threats.
The intensified efforts to control illegal residency in Israel have been prompted by a complete ban on Palestinian workers entering the country for employment.
