An Arab Israeli man, Nur Youssef, 32, was sentenced to 15 years in prison by the Tel Aviv District Court on Thursday for his role in the brutal beating of an Israel Defense Forces (IDF) soldier during the nationwide unrest that erupted in May 2021.
In addition to his prison term, Youssef was ordered to pay NIS 100,000 (approximately $27,000) in damages to the victim.
Youssef was convicted in February of attempted murder after he was found to have joined a mob that assaulted the soldier on a main road in Jaffa.
Eyewitness accounts revealed that Youssef ran across the street and struck the soldier over the head with a three-kilogram (6.6-pound) rock, contributing to the severe injuries the soldier sustained during the attack.
During the trial, Youssef’s defense claimed that he did not intend to kill the soldier and only acted out of fear, believing the soldier was armed with a stone and posed a threat.
However, the court dismissed this argument, emphasizing the reckless nature of his actions and the intent to inflict serious harm.
Prosecutors, Uri Goldstein and Oren Haim, expressed disappointment with the sentence, stating they had sought a more severe penalty of 24 years in prison.
