In a remarkable incident that unfolded in Kfar Saba, 72-year-old Yossi Bezalel was bitten by a venomous viper while taking cover from missile sirens triggered by an attack from Yemen. The incident, reported by Israeli media on Thursday, underscores both the dangers of the region and the importance of adhering to safety protocols during emergencies.
Bezalel was among a group of individuals who sought refuge in a pit approximately 1.5 meters deep, following instructions from the Home Front Command during the missile alert. “We moved away from our vehicles and went to the side of the road into a pit to take cover. I put my hands on my head as instructed, and suddenly I felt a sharp pain in my left hand,” he recounted.
In a moment of panic and confusion, Bezalel managed to photograph the snake that had bitten him, before contacting his wife to inform her of his condition. “I told her I was receiving medical treatment from a nearby Magen David Adom (MDA) team,” he said. The swift response from the MDA proved crucial, as the paramedics assured Bezalel’s wife that he was stable and en route to the hospital for further treatment.
Describing the effects of the snakebite, Bezalel noted, “After being bitten, I felt shaky, pressure in my chest, and weakness in my legs. I didn’t know what was happening, but I started to feel unwell.”
Medical staff at the hospital examined the wound and determined that antivenom treatment was necessary due to the rapid swelling in his hand. Bezalel entered intensive care at 9 a.m. the following morning and was discharged by 4 p.m. the same day, a testament to the efficiency of the medical response.
Vipers, known for their distinctive broad heads and large hinged fangs, can pose a significant threat due to their potent venom. Bezalel’s experience serves as a reminder of the potential dangers posed not only by conflict but also by the wildlife in the region.

The bite could have been on my head, which would have been much more dangerous,” he explained.
