Honest Reporting, an Israeli advocacy group, has unveiled the first-ever interactive digital map detailing Hamas’s extensive tunnel network beneath Gaza, providing an unprecedented look at the infrastructure used by the militant group.
The map, which was published earlier this week, offers a comprehensive visualization of more than 37 miles of tunnels—representing less than 10% of the estimated underground system Hamas is believed to have constructed in Gaza.
The interactive tool, which Honest Reporting introduced on X/Twitter, allows users to explore key locations within Gaza that are intertwined with Hamas’s operations.
This includes residential areas, hospitals, mosques, and schools where tunnel entrances have been embedded.
According to the group, these tunnels were used for weapons smuggling, attacks on Israeli civilians, and the storage of weaponry, all of which place Palestinian civilians at significant risk.
Key landmarks featured on the map include the former residence of Hamas leader Yahya Sinwar and the group’s operational base located beneath the Shifa Hospital, Gaza’s largest medical facility.
Also highlighted are United Nations Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA) sites, areas where Israeli hostages were held after the October 7th attacks, and locations involved in hostage release parades. The map also offers geographical details of cross-border breaches involving Israel and Egypt.
“This interactive map offers the first detailed visualization of Hamas’ tunnels of terror and key events in the Israel-Hamas war, revealing how Hamas endangers Palestinian civilians while threatening Israeli lives,” Honest Reporting said in a statement on its website.
The tunnels, many of which are found underneath civilian infrastructure, have long been a central point of conflict. More than 5,700 tunnel entrance shafts have been documented in structures like homes, schools, and hospitals, essentially weaponizing these everyday spaces.
The IDF (Israel Defense Forces) recently exposed a “strategic” level tunnel stretching four kilometers long and extending 50 meters deep, underlining the depth of Hamas’s underground operations.
Each marker on the interactive map comes with detailed background information, geographic coordinates, photos, and links to related reports.
These markers are aimed at providing clarity about the complexities of the tunnel network and its role in the ongoing conflict between Israel and Hamas.
Honest Reporting has stressed the importance of making this information accessible, asserting that it offers a clear picture of how Hamas has exploited civilian areas for military purposes.
The advocacy group aims to increase transparency and shed light on what it considers to be a deliberate effort by Hamas to use civilians as human shields, placing them in harm’s way while posing a direct threat to Israel.
