In the midst of an escalating crisis over its nuclear programme, Iran declared that it is prepared for new indirect negotiations with the United States to clear the final obstacles and salvage the shattered 2015 nuclear agreement with major powers.
Majid Takht Ravanchi, the UN ambassador from Tehran, said that the Iranian “negotiating team is ready to engage constructively again to finalise and reach agreement” on Thursday before the UN Security Council.
The accord “is not out of reach,” he said, if the US acts realistically and exhibits a sincere desire to carry out its duties.
A day after indirect talks between Iran and the US broke down in Qatar due to a lack of significant progress, Ravanchi made his comments. However, Ravanchi called the Qatari negotiations “serious and good.”
For the “next level of talks,” he said, Iran will get in touch with the coordinators from the European Union.
Iran reiterated its willingness to offer innovative solutions to the outstanding issues during extensive discussions with the EU’s top diplomat Josep Borrell in Tehran last week, according to Ravanchi, who spoke to the UN meeting on the resolution endorsing the 2015 nuclear deal and its five permanent members, the US, Russia, China, United Kingdom, and France, as well as Germany.
US deputy ambassador Richard Mills informed the council prior to Ravanchi’s speech that Washington “remains committed to a mutual return to full implementation” of the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA).
