In light of recent high-profile killings linked to the ongoing conflict between Israel and militant groups, security around Israeli athletes participating in the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris has been significantly heightened.
The move comes as French and Israeli authorities anticipate potential retaliation from factions loyal to Hamas and Hezbollah.
The decision to bolster security was made following the targeted killings of prominent figures in the conflict. On Tuesday night, Israeli airstrikes resulted in the death of Fuad Shukr, a senior Hezbollah military leader.
This was swiftly followed by the assassination of Ismail Haniyeh, a senior Hamas political leader, which occurred several hours later. Israel has not officially commented on the latter incident.
In response to these developments, the Shin Bet security agency, which is responsible for the protection of Israel’s Olympic delegation, conducted an emergency assessment.
This assessment concluded that additional security measures were necessary to safeguard the athletes and support staff. Consequently, extra Shin Bet agents and French security personnel have been deployed to ensure the safety of the Israeli team.
The enhanced security measures include the presence of guards at multiple locations frequented by the delegation, including the Olympic Village and other key facilities. Athletes have been briefed on potential threats and advised on appropriate conduct to minimize risks.
Foreign Minister Israel Katz has publicly acknowledged the heightened security situation, emphasizing the increased threat level posed by Iran-backed groups.
Katz’s comments underscore the broader context of tensions that have escalated due to the ongoing conflict between Israel and Hamas in Gaza.
The Israeli delegation had already been placed under high security upon their arrival in Paris, reflecting the ongoing concern about potential attacks.
The current situation underscores the challenges of ensuring the safety of international athletes amid geopolitical conflicts and highlights the complex security environment surrounding global sporting events.
As the Olympics continue, both Israeli and French authorities remain vigilant, working to protect athletes and prevent any disruptions to the Games.
The situation serves as a stark reminder of the impact of international conflicts on global events and the imperative of maintaining security and safety for all participants.
