The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) announced on Thursday the tragic loss of three soldiers during ongoing military operations in the northern Gaza Strip.
The fallen soldiers, Staff-Sergeant-Major (res.) Ori Moshe Borenstein, Major (res.) Netanel Hershkovitz, and Staff-Sergeant-Major (res.) Tzvi Matityahu Marantz, were serving in the Gaza region as part of the ongoing conflict between Israel and Hamas.
The soldiers, all part of the IDF’s Logistical Support Unit within the 5460th Unit of the 460th Brigade, died during a mission in the northern part of the Gaza Strip on October 8, 2024.
Their deaths bring the grim toll of Israeli military casualties to 734 soldiers since the outbreak of hostilities on October 7, 2023. Of these, 351 soldiers have been killed since the IDF launched its ground operations in Gaza on October 27, 2023.
Honoring the Fallen
Staff-Sergeant-Major (res.) Ori Moshe Borenstein, 32, from Moreshet, served as an Armored Personnel Carrier (APC) commander.
His distinguished service in the IDF spanned years, with his comrades recalling his leadership and commitment to the safety of his fellow soldiers.
Borenstein was known for his ability to navigate difficult terrain and for maintaining the morale of his troops even during the most intense operations.
Major (res.) Netanel Hershkovitz, 37, from Jerusalem, served as a deputy company commander in the 460th Brigade.
Hershkovitz’s reputation as a dedicated and strategic leader in the IDF was well-established, and he played a crucial role in the planning and execution of numerous operations during the conflict.
His family described him as a devoted father and husband, who balanced his military duties with a deep love for his home life.
Staff-Sergeant-Major (res.) Tzvi Matityahu Marantz, from Bnei Adam, served as a squad commander within the brigade. Marantz, a seasoned soldier, was known for his exceptional bravery and tactical skill.
His dedication to protecting his team during operations earned him the admiration of those who served alongside him.
Ongoing Military Operations in Gaza
The deaths of Borenstein, Hershkovitz, and Marantz come as the IDF intensifies its ground operations in Gaza, part of a broader effort to eliminate Hamas’ military capabilities and restore security to southern Israel.
The northern Gaza Strip, where the three soldiers were killed, has been a focal point of the military’s efforts to neutralize Hamas strongholds.
The military operations, launched on October 27, 2023, have led to the deaths of hundreds of Israeli soldiers, with the conflict showing no signs of abating.
The ground campaign, which has seen intense fighting in urban areas, is one of the most complex military endeavors the IDF has undertaken in recent years.
The loss of these soldiers highlights the human cost of the conflict, as Israel continues its efforts to secure its borders.
Military and Public Response
The IDF Spokesperson’s Unit expressed its deep condolences to the families of the fallen soldiers, noting their exceptional contributions to the safety and security of Israel.
The IDF, the spokesperson added, remains steadfast in its mission to protect the nation, even as it faces ongoing losses on the battlefield.
As Israel mourns the loss of these soldiers, the nation remains united in its support for the men and women serving in the military.
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, in a statement, acknowledged the sacrifices of Borenstein, Hershkovitz, and Marantz, calling them “heroes who gave their lives in defense of our people.”
The conflict, which began in October 2023, has claimed thousands of lives on both sides, with ongoing military operations aimed at weakening Hamas’ control in Gaza.
Despite the significant toll, the Israeli government remains resolute in its objectives, while the nation grieves the heavy losses sustained by the IDF.
