NESS ZIONA, Israel – Ryan Turell, the former Yeshiva University basketball star, is making waves in the Israeli Basketball Premier League after recovering from a knee injury that sidelined him for the start of the season.
Turell’s journey from NCAA Division III dominance to becoming a key player for Ness Ziona has captivated basketball fans both in Israel and abroad, as he continues to showcase his unique skill set and infectious energy.
The 25-year-old California native signed with Ness Ziona over the summer after spending two seasons in the NBA G League with the Motor City Cruise.
Turell, the first Orthodox Jewish player drafted in the G League, has been a beacon of hope and excitement for Ness Ziona fans since his debut earlier in November.
From NCAA Stardom to International Play
Turell’s basketball journey began at Yeshiva University, where he shattered records and earned national accolades. As a senior in the 2021/22 season, he led the nation in scoring across all divisions, averaging 27.1 points per game.
Turell’s achievements included being named NABC Division III National Player of the Year and guiding his team to a historic 50-game winning streak.
Following his college career, Turell was selected in the first round of the 2022 NBA G League draft by the Motor City Cruise. While he displayed flashes of brilliance in the G League, Turell faced challenges in securing consistent playing time.
His persistence paid off when he signed briefly with the Detroit Pistons in October 2023, though he was waived the same day. In July 2024, Turell took his talents to Ness Ziona, a decision that has reinvigorated his career.
A Strong Comeback from Injury
Turell’s start in Israel was delayed by a knee injury suffered during an exhibition game. Despite the setback, he remained determined to return stronger.
After months of rehabilitation and conditioning, Turell made his league debut against Hapoel Holon, contributing six points in 12 minutes.
Just days later, he delivered an electrifying performance against Kiryat Ata, scoring 16 points in 23 minutes on a flawless 6-for-6 shooting night.
Reflecting on his rehabilitation journey, Turell expressed gratitude for the support of Ness Ziona’s medical staff and his faith. “It was very tough for me, especially right when it happened,” Turell said.
“I didn’t know if I’d be out for the year, and all those thoughts were going through my head. But I’m a big believer that everything happens for a reason, and Hashem blessed me that it was just the MCL and that I was able to get back within three months.”
Impact on Ness Ziona
Head Coach Amit Sherf praised Turell’s commitment and energy, which have already begun to energize the team and its supporters. “We brought Ryan in because we saw his potential, even though he hadn’t played in Europe yet,” Sherf explained.
“He’s a player who hustles, has a good shot, and brings a lot of passion. His enthusiasm gives us a lot, fires up the players and supporters, and gave us momentum during the most difficult moments.”
Turell’s ability to inspire his teammates has been evident, with Sherf noting how his presence has elevated the team’s intensity during games.
“He didn’t force anything,” Sherf said. “Things came together because he’s energetic, goes after every ball, helps us with rebounding, and gets uncontested 3-pointers.”
Embracing the Challenge
Turell, known for his humility and work ethic, is relishing the opportunity to compete at the highest level of Israeli basketball. He acknowledges the learning curve but remains focused on contributing to the team’s success.
“I have all this energy from not being on the court for so long, and I’m excited to be back and impact the game any way I can,” Turell said. “You can’t control how many times you’re going to touch the ball or how many minutes you’ll get, but you can control your energy.”
The fans at Lev HaMoshava Arena have embraced Turell’s spirited play, with the swingman feeding off their enthusiasm.
“I love feeding off the home fans who come out and support us,” Turell said. “If we can make the game more entertaining and use their energy on the court, hopefully, they’ll keep getting louder as the season goes on.”
Looking Ahead
With Turell back in the lineup, Ness Ziona is poised to make a strong push this season. The team’s chemistry and talent, combined with Turell’s scoring ability and leadership, have raised expectations. However, Turell remains grounded, emphasizing the importance of taking it one game at a time.
“This team is very talented and has a lot of upside,” Turell said. “A mistake I made in the past, in college, when I was first starting out, was looking too far ahead. We’ve got to focus on every game and make sure we win each one. Every single game, we have to play like it’s our last.”
Saturday’s Matchup
Ness Ziona will face Hapoel Beersheba on Saturday night, offering fans another opportunity to see Turell in action.
As the team continues to integrate him into its system, both players and supporters are optimistic about what lies ahead. With Turell’s energy and determination, Ness Ziona hopes to turn the season into a memorable one.
For Turell, it’s not just about basketball but about inspiring others through his journey. “I’m just blessed to be playing this year and hope to keep getting better and compete,” he said.
As he acclimates to basketball in the Holy Land, Turell’s story serves as a reminder of resilience, faith, and the power of determination.
