Israeli airlines, including El Al, Arkia, and IsraAir, have been instructed by the Shin Bet (Israel Security Agency) to halt all flights to Paphos, Cyprus, this Sunday, citing undisclosed security concerns.

The suspension, confirmed by all three airlines, has left passengers traveling to the popular Cypriot destination frustrated and uncertain about their travel plans.

In statements to Israeli media, the airlines acknowledged the disruption, emphasizing that the cancellations were due to “security reasons that cannot be made public.”

While no specific details have been released, the Shin Bet confirmed that, in place of Paphos, all flights will be rerouted to Larnaca International Airport, located on the southeastern coast of Cyprus, approximately 140 kilometers away.

Passengers affected by the change have voiced their concerns, sharing that they received notifications regarding the cancellations or diversions of their flights.

Despite the altered destinations, passengers are reportedly not prohibited from traveling to Paphos independently after landing in Larnaca, with some travelers making alternative arrangements to reach their original destination.

The move comes as Israel’s security agencies continue to maintain a heightened level of alertness in light of ongoing regional tensions.

While the specifics of the security threat remain confidential, Israel has long been vigilant about potential risks in various international locations, particularly those with a high concentration of Israeli travelers.

For many passengers, the rerouting to Larnaca has caused inconvenience, as the detour requires additional travel time and logistical adjustments.

“It’s disappointing to be told at the last minute that our flight is canceled,” one passenger shared with Ynet, noting the frustration of having to make last-minute changes. “We understand the importance of safety, but it’s still a major inconvenience.”

The rerouting to Larnaca also adds to the challenge for travelers who may have planned activities or accommodations specifically in the Paphos region. However, many have expressed understanding, recognizing the priority placed on security.

Both Arkia and IsraAir are working with passengers to provide assistance with the changes, including offering alternatives for accommodations and transportation to Larnaca. El Al, the national carrier, has not yet made additional comments beyond confirming the cancellation of flights.

The security measures implemented by the Shin Bet and the rerouting of flights reflect Israel’s broader security strategy, which regularly involves precautions in response to emerging threats, particularly those targeting Israeli nationals abroad.

As tensions persist in the Middle East, Israeli authorities remain vigilant and proactive in ensuring the safety of their citizens, both at home and abroad. With the flights to Paphos suspended for the time being, travelers are advised to check with their respective airlines for further updates and instructions.
