In a press conference held on Monday morning, Shino Zuaretz, Chairman of the Israel Football Association (IFA), addressed grave allegations surrounding match-fixing in the country’s lower-tier leagues, announcing the suspension of dozens of officials under suspicion.

The allegations, which span both the current and previous seasons, are linked to incidents of dual contracts and organized match-fixing, particularly in Liga Alef North and Liga Bet North.

“This is a sad day for Israeli football,” Zuaretz declared, adding that a significant number of officials involved in the fixing scandal would face suspension.

He revealed that the IFA’s ongoing investigation into these issues had revealed troubling findings, which he said would not be ignored.

Zuaretz indicated that the IFA was prepared to request the suspension of Liga Alef North entirely, as the allegations surrounding the league’s corruption appeared to be severe and widespread.

“We are not dealing with rumors but with facts,” he emphasized, underscoring the association’s commitment to transparency and integrity in Israeli football.

“We will investigate and address every piece of information we receive to ensure the game remains clean.”

The IFA has been working with a private investigation firm for over six months, uncovering disturbing evidence suggesting that more than half of the teams in Liga Alef North may be involved in match-fixing or game sales.

In addition to the match-fixing rings, reports indicate that criminal organizations have been financing these illicit activities. This revelation has raised concerns about the broader integrity of the league and the influence of illegal practices on the sport.

Zuaretz’s statements came after UEFA officials were reportedly informed about the investigation and have expressed satisfaction with how the IFA is handling the matter.

The European football governing body, known for its vigilance on match-fixing issues, has placed confidence in the Israeli association’s actions.

The IFA’s leadership has vowed to take further decisive action to eliminate corruption from Israeli football, with Zuaretz stating that “those involved will have no place in football.”

The association intends to collaborate closely with the Israel Police to pursue criminal indictments against those implicated in the scandal.

In addition to addressing the issue of match-fixing, Zuaretz raised concerns about the prevalence of illegal gambling in Israeli football.

According to the IFA Chairman, approximately 19 billion shekels are funneled through illegal betting markets, many of which operate through foreign websites.

Zuaretz suggested that legalizing live betting could serve as a potential solution to curb the power of illicit gambling operations that are contributing to match-fixing.

The IFA’s swift and decisive actions reflect its determination to maintain the integrity of the sport and ensure that it remains a fair and transparent platform for all players, coaches, and fans.

As the investigation continues, Israeli football faces a critical moment in addressing corruption and ensuring a cleaner future for the game.
