The Swiss Fencing Association has issued a formal apology to the Israeli fencing team following a controversial act during the medal ceremony at the European Under-23 Fencing Championship held in Tallinn, Estonia, last week.
The incident occurred after Israel’s male under-23 team secured the gold medal, with Switzerland taking silver and Italy bronze. During the playing of Israel’s national anthem, Hatikvah, the Swiss athletes were seen turning their backs on the Israeli team, a move that drew swift condemnation and sparked a diplomatic outcry.
According to a report by Israel’s Channel 12 on Tuesday, the Swiss Fencing Association sent a letter of apology to their Israeli counterparts. In the letter, the association claimed the athletes’ actions were driven by “personal feelings of discomfort and general empathy toward the situation” rather than political motives.
“The athletes acted independently, and the action was not politically motivated,” the letter reportedly stated. “We understand that this gesture caused offense and regret any pain it may have caused. We reaffirm our commitment to sportsmanship and fair play.”
Despite the apology, the backlash has been significant. A representative from the Israel Fencing Association responded sharply, stating, “Sport should bring people together, not divide them.” The association emphasized that international sporting events must remain platforms for unity, respect, and mutual recognition, regardless of political or personal sentiments.
Foreign Minister Gideon Sa’ar also weighed in, posting a message on X (formerly Twitter) where he praised the Israeli and Italian teams but condemned the Swiss athletes.
“Shame on the Swiss team for their disrespectful behaviour,” Sa’ar wrote. “You don’t know how to lose and behave in a manner that is an embarrassment to you and the country you’re supposed to represent.”
The incident has reignited debate over the role of political expression in sports, particularly amid ongoing tensions in the Middle East. It follows several recent instances in international sports where athletes have used podiums or competitions to make political or humanitarian statements, some of which have sparked controversy or disciplinary action.
The European Fencing Confederation has not yet commented publicly on whether the Swiss team will face any disciplinary measures. However, some observers within the fencing community are calling for a clear stance to ensure that such acts do not undermine the spirit of international competition.
In the meantime, the Israeli team has maintained its composure, focusing on their sporting achievements and preparing for future competitions. Team officials expressed pride in their athletes for winning gold and representing their country with honor amid a tense moment.
This year’s European Under-23 Championship was intended to showcase the rising talent in the sport, but it has instead drawn attention to broader geopolitical issues and the importance of preserving integrity and respect within international sporting arenas.
As discussions continue, many in the sports world are watching to see how governing bodies will respond to ensure such controversies do not overshadow athletic excellence in the future.
