TEL AVIV – June 2, 2025 — The Israel National Football Team is preparing for two crucial World Cup qualifying matches in the coming fortnight, beginning with a visit to Estonia next Friday, followed by a home encounter with Slovakia on June 10.

Sitting third in Group I with one win and one loss, Israel is looking to build momentum in its campaign and secure vital points. Having defeated Estonia in their first group meeting back in March, coach Ran Ben Shimon’s squad will aim to repeat that success in Tallinn.

However, Ben Shimon warned against complacency. “When Estonia plays the big teams at home, they cause plenty of problems,” he said. “We’ve seen how strong they can be on their turf, and we need to be mentally sharp.”

Israel’s Group I standings show Norway leading, with Estonia in second place. Italy, which has yet to play, is in fourth, and Moldova rounds out the group. With tight competition, every point counts, and the upcoming fixtures could be pivotal in shaping Israel’s qualifying journey.

Ben Shimon has named a large 28-man squad for the June window, balancing experience with youth. “This is the most difficult call-up period of the year,” he acknowledged.

“Some players are still playing in Europe, some are mentally and physically exhausted, and we’ve had to make decisions with care and empathy, especially in light of the ongoing war and the recent passing of Gadi Kinda.”

The late Gadi Kinda, a former national team player, tragically passed away earlier this year, casting a shadow over Israeli football. “His death affected some of the players deeply,” Ben Shimon noted. “We need to give some individuals the space to recover mentally.”

Among the notable absences is Maccabi Haifa striker Dia Saba. “We decided together that this window wasn’t right for him,” Ben Shimon explained. “It’s not the end of the story for anyone, but we need players who are 100% ready right now.”

Several younger players are expected to feature more prominently, particularly in the Slovakia game, which follows the Muslim holiday. “This summer gives us a unique opportunity to look at the next generation,” Ben Shimon added, highlighting the inclusion of emerging talents like Anan Khalaili, who recently won the Belgian title with Royale Union Saint-Gilloise. “His time will come. I have no doubt he’ll be a key player for us in the future.”

Tai Baribo, currently in top form with Philadelphia Union in the MLS, is also among the forward options. Despite not receiving much recognition in recent outings, Ben Shimon praised his current condition and confirmed he is a contender for the starting lineup.

While the team may have fewer defensive players than expected, Ben Shimon remains confident. “We know how we want to play. It’s about quality and tactical fit, not just numbers.”

With Israel aiming to rise up the standings and edge closer to World Cup qualification, all eyes will be on Tallinn next Friday. Ben Shimon and his squad know the task ahead is challenging — but achievable with focus, discipline, and belief.
