In recent years, Israel has witnessed a troubling increase in child abuse cases, a trend that has been significantly exacerbated by societal challenges and heightened awareness.

The tragic events of October 7 have deepened the trauma and instability affecting the country, with children bearing the brunt of this turmoil.

This demographic, one of the most vulnerable in society, often struggles to express their experiences of abuse, burdened by feelings of shame and fear. For many, the violence and instability in their communities only compound the abuse they suffer in silence.

The Impact of October 7 on Israeli Children

The horrific events of October 7 have left a deep imprint on Israeli society, creating an environment where trauma and instability are pervasive.

Children, already vulnerable, are suffering more than ever. The displacement of families from the northern regions of Israel, driven by escalating conflict, has forced many into cramped and precarious living conditions, such as small hotel rooms.

This displacement has significantly impacted families, particularly parents who have lost their jobs and stability, leading to heightened psychological and financial pressures.

In some extreme cases, these pressures manifest in harmful behaviors towards children that would have seemed inconceivable in more stable times.

Eran Zimrin, CEO of ELI (The Israel Association for Child Protection), underscores the severity of the situation.

He notes, “The strains of displacement and war have exacerbated family tensions. Many families evacuated to hotels in the South or center of the country are struggling to adjust.”

“The combined pressures of living in one room with no certainty about the future, no work, and the emotional toll of the war are immense. Unfortunately, this has sometimes led to instances of parental violence.”

One poignant example of this crisis involved hotel staff notifying ELI about a 14-year-old girl found wandering alone. Her parents were discovered intoxicated in their room, highlighting the desperate need for ELI’s services, especially during such crises.

Increasing Frequency of Abuse Reports

According to Zimrin, the frequency of abuse reports has surged since the onset of the conflict.

“The disruption to family life, the emotional toll of the conflict, and financial hardships are creating conditions where even normally loving parents can lose control,” he explains.

This increase in abuse cases underscores the urgent need for intervention and support to prevent these situations from escalating into long-term trauma.

In response to the growing crisis, ELI has developed a comprehensive school-based child abuse awareness and prevention program.

This initiative is designed to address abuse directly within children’s learning environments, providing a vital support system during these turbulent times.

ELI’s Innovative Approach to Abuse Prevention

ELI’s school-based program, which has become crucial in the current climate, aims to identify and prevent abuse by equipping children, educators, and families with the necessary tools to recognize and address abuse.

The program uses innovative educational methods, including “edutainment”—a blend of education and entertainment.

Through plays and musicals, children learn about body boundaries, while older students are educated on issues such as cyberbullying and safe internet practices.

Zimrin emphasizes the importance of this approach: “Raising awareness is just the first step. We need to provide effective therapeutic intervention for children who have already experienced abuse. Our school-based program is designed to do just that, providing not only education but also direct support and therapy.”

The program’s comprehensive nature includes training for school professionals, discussions led by social workers or counselors, and therapeutic support for identified victims of abuse.

This holistic approach ensures that children receive the necessary care and attention to address both immediate and long-term needs.

Challenges and Successes in Addressing Abuse

Despite the challenges, ELI has seen significant successes in its efforts. The organization has expanded its reach thanks to support from various partners, including the Jewish Agency.

This summer, ELI extended its program to thousands of children in absorption centers across the North, South, and Jerusalem, including many Ethiopian children.

This expansion is a testament to the critical role ELI plays in providing support during times of societal upheaval.

Zimrin highlights a successful case where local authorities recognized the issue and increased their support: “We received a personal request from a mayor who was proactive in addressing the problem. With increased awareness and responsibility from local authorities, we were able to expand our availability from two therapy rooms to five.”

The Importance of Continued Support

ELI’s nearly 45 years of experience demonstrate that growing awareness often leads to more cases being identified and addressed. However, the increase in reported cases also brings to light the necessity for a robust therapeutic response.

ELI is uniquely positioned to provide this support, offering not just therapy for the child but also for the entire family.

This holistic approach helps break the cycle of intergenerational abuse, providing families with alternative paths and setting them on a path towards healing.

Zimrin concludes, “Usually, we’re dealing with intergenerational cycles of violence. Our goal is to show families a different path and help them break the cycle. With our expanded programs and increased support, we are making strides towards this goal.”

Call to Action: Supporting ELI

The trauma faced by Israeli children in the wake of October 7 is profound, and their silent suffering must not be overlooked. These vulnerable children, many living in unstable and overcrowded conditions, need urgent intervention.

ELI is at the forefront, providing essential support through therapy, education, and prevention programs that reach children in schools, communities, and even displaced families.
