Tayasir, West Bank – Eight Israel Defense Forces (IDF) soldiers were wounded in a shooting attack early Tuesday morning near the Palestinian village of Tayasir, north of the Jordan Valley.

The attacker arrived at the Tayasir checkpoint and opened fire on soldiers stationed at the outpost, catching them off guard.

According to initial reports, the assailant infiltrated the area under cover of darkness, likely arriving in the middle of the night and waiting for daylight to launch his attack.

The incident unfolded around 6:00 a.m. when two soldiers were exiting the outpost. As they opened the door, the assailant immediately opened fire, injuring them.

He then positioned himself at the entrance and continued firing at the other soldiers inside the compound.

Despite being surprised, the IDF troops responded swiftly, returning fire from within the outpost and from the watchtower.

The assailant attempted to retreat in an effort to flee, but the acting battalion commander arrived on the scene with additional reinforcements and engaged the terrorist from a new angle.

During the confrontation, a soldier threw a grenade at the attacker, wounding him and halting his ability to continue firing. IDF forces then advanced on the suspect and fatally shot him at close range.

A nearby IDF drone provided intelligence throughout the incident, but due to the close-quarters nature of the firefight, it was unable to engage the attacker without risking harm to Israeli soldiers.

Security Concerns Raised Over Checkpoint Defenses

Military officials have raised concerns about the security measures in place at the Tayasir checkpoint, questioning the troops’ ability to adequately protect themselves against such an attack.

Palestinian footage from the scene indicates that the assailant approached from a built-up area, using the darkness to his advantage before entering the checkpoint and launching his assault.

Some footage also suggests that shots were fired at the pillbox structure, though it remains unclear whether they were from the assailant himself or if he was being fired upon by IDF forces.

Attack Amid Intensified IDF Operations in West Bank

The attack comes as the IDF intensifies counterterrorism operations across the West Bank, particularly in Jenin, Tubas, Tammun, Tulkarm, and Kabatiya, as part of Operation Iron Wall.

Just a day before the shooting, Israeli forces reported over 100 arrests of wanted individuals and the elimination of approximately 50 suspected terrorists.

Additionally, the IDF confiscated dozens of weapons and explosive devices while demolishing 23 structures allegedly used for terrorist activities in Jenin.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu described the ongoing operation as “a large-scale and significant military effort to eliminate terrorism in Jenin” and reaffirmed Israel’s commitment to combating threats posed by the “Iranian axis” in the region.

He stated that the IDF would continue to neutralize threats “whether in Gaza, Lebanon, Syria, Yemen, or Judea and Samaria.”

Reinforcements Deployed to the West Bank

In response to increasing security threats, the IDF has deployed special units and combat battalions across the West Bank to secure roads, protect settlements, and conduct widespread arrests.

Following Tuesday’s attack, the Yesha Council issued a statement expressing support for the IDF: “In this difficult hour, we wish to strengthen the IDF soldiers and their commanders. Our brave fighters’ relentless battle keeps vile terrorists away from Israeli citizens and prevents scenes similar to October 7 from occurring in Afula and Netanya.”

The council further urged the Israeli government to take decisive action, stating, “This morning’s attack once again proves that Arab terrorism seeks to harm the State of Israel and IDF soldiers. The Israeli government must decisively defeat terrorism and prevent the establishment of a terrorist state in the heart of the country.”

As tensions remain high, Israeli security officials have vowed to continue their military operations until stability is restored in the region.
