In a heartrending testimony before a Knesset committee, the mother of Yagev Buchshtav, a hostage who was found dead last month, revealed that an autopsy report indicated her son had been executed by his captors.
Buchshtav, 35, was among six hostages whose bodies were recovered by the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) from Khan Younis, located in southern Gaza.
The disclosure comes amidst a broader investigation into the fate of hostages taken by Hamas.
Recent reports revealed that six other hostages had also been executed by their captors. This new information adds to the growing grief and anger among the families of the victims.
“My son was kidnapped alive, he should have returned alive, he came back dead, murdered,” the mother of Buchshtav told the committee. She expressed the profound agony of receiving an autopsy report confirming that her son had been executed.
According to her testimony, the IDF was reportedly close to the tunnel where Buchshtav and the other hostages were held at the time of their deaths.
“The army was close to the tunnel and they were executed. That’s what comes from military pressure. Military pressure does not bring hostages back alive, it kills them,” she lamented.
Despite her criticisms, she stopped short of blaming the military, instead directing her frustration at the government’s policies. “I do not think the army is guilty here, it is the policy of the government,” she said.
Buchshtav was taken captive along with his wife, Rimon Kirsht Buchshtav. Rimon was released on November 28 as part of a temporary ceasefire agreement.
During her captivity, she and her husband were together. Upon learning of her release, Rimon initially refused to leave without Yagev. She was reportedly told that she would have to leave willingly or be dragged away.
The news of Yagev Buchshtav’s execution has sparked outrage and sorrow within the community, highlighting the ongoing suffering of families affected by the conflict.
The IDF and Israeli government have yet to respond to the specific claims made by Buchshtav’s mother, as investigations into the circumstances of the hostages‘ deaths continue.
This tragic revelation underscores the brutal realities of the ongoing conflict and the profound impact on the lives of those caught in its crossfire.
